Selected Images From Encyclopedia, 2025

The images presented in Another Orchids – Orchid Encyclopedia are all derived from orchid species collected from printed publications, and subsequently re-researched, edited, and reconfigured through online sources. The dense blocks of text accompanying each image originate from the original botanical descriptions of orchid species found in these books; however, they no longer correspond directly to the images beneath which they appear. Instead, the texts drift and are deliberately displaced across images, producing a poetic disturbance to systems of natural classification and taxonomic logic.

While orchids in nature commonly appear in hues of red, pink, orange, yellow, green, purple, and white, no truly blue orchid has ever been discovered. In one version of the Encyclopedia, the image of a “blue orchid” is generated through a collaboration between human intervention and an open-source diffusion model developed by Stability AI. The accompanying text is written by ChatGPT, fabricating and imagining a description in response to the generated image.
